Background
Under the Cooling and Air Conditioning Directive, around 5,200 highly energy-efficient cooling and air conditioning systems have already been subsidized with nearly 200 million euros. These subsidized measures can lead to energy savings of approximately 40 percent, significantly contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and supporting the German government´s climate protection goals.
What´s New in the Air Conditioning Subsidy?
The new feature is the subsidy for the “Efficiency Retrofit of Small Systems.” This program enables the first-time funding of existing small cooling generators, such as compression cooling systems for normal and deep-freezing. Additionally, the subsidy amount for energy-efficient systems has been increased.
Who can apply?
Eligible applicants include companies, non-profit organizers, municipalities, universities, and other institutions, regardless of profit orientation. The applicant must be the owner, tenant, or lessee of the relevant property or to be authorized be them. Applications can be submitted either by the applicant or by an authorized representative. Private individuals, federal states, and their institutions, as well as state-owned companies that differ from the above, are not eligible to apply.
How to Apply?
Applications are submitted electronically to the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA), which is also responsible for the disbursement of grants.
Important: The project must not begin until the approval notice has been received.
How Much Is the Subsidy?
The amount of the subsidy can be calculated using a subsidy calculator, which considers various parameters such as the type of cooling capacity of the cooling generator and the component of the cooling or air conditioning system.
Further explanations on the topic of air conditioning subsidies can be found in the FAQ section below on this page.

Prefer Renting over Retrofitting? We Have the Solution!
For those who do not wish to invest in retrofitting or new installations despite possible subsidies, temporary rental air conditioning systems and chillers is an option. Renting cooling systems can ensure a comfortable climate in commercial and industrial operations without high acquisition costs. This is especially suitable when year-round air conditioning is not necessary. Mobile Kälte 24 offers rental solutions ranging from mobile split and monoblock units to chillers.

FAQ Air Conditioning Subsidy 2024
What is a small system?
A small system is a cooling or air conditioning system with lower capacity, typically used in small to medium-sized buildings or facilities. These systems have lower powered compared to industrial or commercial large systems.
What is a compression cooling system?
A compression cooling system is a cooling system based on the principle of refrigerant compression. In this process, the refrigerant is compressed to absorb heat and release it elsewhere, leading to the cooling of a room or environment. Many air conditioning and refrigeration systems operate on this principle.
What are non-halogenated refrigerants?
Non-halogenated refrigerants are refrigerants that do not contain halogenated hydrocarbons. Unlike halogenated refrigerants such as chlorofluorocarbons or hydrofluorocarbons, non-halogenated refrigerants contribute less to ozone layer depletion and often have lower greenhouse potential.
What is an approval notice?
An approval notice is a formal document issued to an applicant by a funding authority. It confirms the approval of a financial grant or subsidy for a specific project or undertaking. The approval notice usually includes information on the type and amount of funding, as well as conditions and deadlines that must be met.
What is the difference between a cooling system and an air conditioning system?
The difference between a cooling system and an air conditioning system lies in their primary function and application areas:
- Cooling system: Designed to remove heat from a specific area to achieve a lower temperature. Typically used in industrial, commercial, and technical applications such as cold storage rooms, food processing plants, chemical plants and processes, and the food and beverage industry.
- Air conditioning system: Primarily used to cool, dehumidify, and sometimes heat indoor air in buildings to create a comfortable indoor climate. Used in residential and commercial buildings, offices, shopping centers, vehicles, and other indoor spaces to improve comfort and regulate air quality.
