15 Tips Against Heat

Get through the next hot summer days with our tips to beat the heat.

July 2024 was mostly cool and rainy in the west of Germany, but August has been bringing us tropical hot days. To be well prepared for periods of weather like this, here are some valuable tricks ad tips to beat the heat.

Our Tips Against Heat

1. Avoid being outdoors

If possible, stay indoors during extreme heat to avoid direct sun exposure. While you can shield yourself with the right clothing, it´s much easier to keep the heat outside.

2. Adjust your daily routine

This tip mainly benefits those with flexible schedules. In southern countries, important tasks are done early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the midday heat. Those with flexible work hours can start earlier and spend the afternoon in a cool space. The same applies to workout, which should be kept light in extreme heat.

3. Ensure air circulation

Using a fan can help circulate air in a room, aiding in sweat evaporation, which cools the skin. However, avoid aiming the fan directly at your head, as this can lead to summer colds.

4. Use air conditioning, but not too cold

An air conditioner is more effective than a fan as it both circulates and cools the air. However, ensure the temperature is no more than six degrees lower than outside to avoid stressing the body.

5. Ventilate in the morning

No matter which additional heat-beating measures you use, always ensure proper ventilation by opening all windows in the early morning.

6. Eat light meals

Adjust your diet in hot weather to avoid taxing your body with heavy digestion. Opt for light meals or several small ones, like yogurt, smoothies, salads, cold soups, or antipasti.

7. Stay hydrated

Adults should drink at least two liters of water daily, especially on hot, sweaty days.

8. Use evaporative cooling

Water creates coolness when it evaporates. Hang laundry indoors to utilize this effect or keep a spray bottle in the fridge to mist yourself occasionally.

9. Avoid heat sources

Minimize the use of electric appliances during hot hours, as they generate additional heat.

10. Choose appropriate clothing

Wearing long, loose clothing made of cotton or linen may seem counterintuitive but helps cool the body by allowing airflow. Opt for light colors to avoid absorbing heat.

11. Cool down carefully

If visiting a pool, ease into the water to avoid shocking your body with the temperature difference. The same goes for showers – lukewarm is better than ice cold, as the body compensates for sudden cold by generating more heat.

12. Get plants

Urban planners are increasingly using green facades and roofs to combat heat. At home or in the office, plants with large leaves can create a cooling effect through evaporation.

13. Take a siesta

The human body is less efficient in heat. A midday nap can help you recover from the heat and from sleepless nights.

14. Shade your rooms

Block the sun from your home or office with curtains or blinds. Lighter fabrics are preferable to darker ones, which trap heat.

15. Avoid alcohol

Alcohol dehydrates the body, so it´s best to limit its consumption during heatwaves.
